Focus on Marvel Fumetti Part: Bill Mantlo

Page 14! Standard disclaimer: I’m not too sure if I can run the interior pages as printed. But these are not they. So! Thanks to Mark Gruenwald, who had quite a few of these Fumetti Book pages—I present:

Bill Mantlo! Who really was mighty fast. Sure, you all know Rocket Raccoon and Rom The Space Knight. But what you might not know is that he wrote the terribly obscure Sectaurs toy tie-in mini comic! And you would be right if you said, NO one knows it. In fact, no one knows what they were either—very short release toys, more like escaped…

Some notes about this page. Shot in May or June of 1983 at 387 Park Ave South. We dragged all the talent in to shoot this stuff. It would be Mike Carlin (who wrote most of the script in the book) throwing pages at Bill—he’s very good at that. The smooth ovoid object Bill is sitting in front of is a typewriter! An IBM Selectric II. Since it was a pain in the neck to make corrections on this model, Bill would re-type entire pages. But, not to worry, Bill was a “touch typist” (meaning he did not need to look at the words on the page in front of him—stenographers, so trained, would read from the steno book… )who could hit 140 words per minute! Finally—all the editorial offices had floor-to-ceiling cork walls. So everyone used push-pins to hold up anything at all!
