Micro-machining the focusing magnets used in the palm repulsors was the first serious 3-D modeling that worked. Stark Industries had finished developing an early parallel processing computer, my SI9000, and it needed a proper shakedown cruise. I’d say, two folded, Y-shaped magnets that need to wrap around each other to form a perfect sphere and with atomic resolution was a tough enough machining assignment. The tricky part was using etching solvents on raw silicon. Same technology as integrated circuit manufacturing, but computer-aided. The actual shape is just like Leggo block construction because the silicon planes are stepped.
